Protecting High-Risk Properties from Hurricane Damage

In a previous post, we examined some of the property threats that high-risk areas, such as the Gulf Coast, face during hurricane season. As this risky time of year is in full-swing, homeowners can heed the following advice for understanding how to protect their investments and their properties against the common perils hurricanes bring. In addition, having a comprehensive Property Insurance policy that includes Windstorm Insurance will give them the peace of mind.

Prioritize the garage door.

Contrary to popular belief, the roof is not the most vulnerable part of the home; in fact, it’s the garage door. Immense winds and flooding can easily penetrate a garage door that has not been reinforced. A simple DIY kit can be purchased at a home improvement store which includes wooden slats to create an additional barrier. The other option includes investing in a steel garage door, which is much more efficient but also more expensive.

Secure windows and doors.

Broken windows can let in wind and rain, and they can also increase the pressure under the roof. Storm shutters provide the best protection, but boarding up windows when a storm is on the way can help, too. Make sure doors have several locking mechanisms so they don’t fly open; deadbolts are best. And it’s important to secure windows and doors at all sides of the home – not just the one facing the body of water where hurricanes could form – because hurricanes can swirl in any direction, recommends Kiplinger.

Trim the trees.

Before a storm hits, it’s crucial to take an inventory of the trees surrounding the property. Loose branches, limbs, or dead sections of the tree could become airborne in a storm, landing on the roof or even breaking a window. Homeowners are liable for paying damages caused by trees on their property, even if it damages a neighbor’s house, so take extra precaution during the hurricane season.

Remember the roof.

Hurricane straps can be used to secure the roof to the home. Next, protect the roof with roofing cement to prevent them from flying away, damaging other property, and exposing the home to the elements.
